Jairus was the leader of a local synagogue in Israel during the time of Jesus. He had a lovely daughter. He loved her so much. Everyday when daddy came back from the synagogue his princess would run over to him and leap over him and kiss him. She would play with him. How the daddy daughter duo would have enjoyed together? Daddy can’t stay happy without seeing his daughter.
Daughter falls sick
One day the daughter fell sick. She got a fever. It wasn’t reducing at all. It rose higher and higher. The daughter became bed ridden. She didn’t play with daddy. She didn’t talk with daddy. She didn’t leap over her daddy when he came home. She was not able to kiss her daddy when he came home. Dad became so worried and troubled. He cried many times in seclusion. He even felt like, why did this fever ever hit my daughter? Why don’t this fever come to me? Why should my daughter suffer?
He consulted many doctors. He spent so much wealth to try to get her daughter back to normal. He even took her to the best doctors in town. But, the condition seemed to get worse.
Jairus goes to Jesus
Jairus had heard about Jesus when he used to work in the synagogue. He had heard about the miracles Jesus had done. So he left the synagogue and went in search of Jesus. He knew that Jesus could bring back her daughter to normal. When he found Jesus, he came and fell down before him. He pleaded to Jesus. The word pleaded means “make and emotional appeal”. He wept out his heart to Jesus. He cried to Jesus saying, “My lovely princess is at the point of death. Please come and place your hands on her and make her live.” He lost all his shame. He was a loving father. To make his daughter live, he didn’t care about his worldly status. He didn’t consider himself in a high estate. He shook off all these for his lovely daughter.
Jesus overheard
Jesus was moved by this daddy’s love. He rose up and went along with him without a word. As they were going, suddenly the messengers from Jairus’ home arrived with a shocking update. They said, “Your lovely daughter is dead! There is no point in Jesus coming now.”
But, Jesus overheard about what they said. He ignored their comments. Before Jairus could do anything, he turned to Jairus and said, “Don’t be afraid. Just trust me”. Then they finally reached Jairus’ house. Jesus didn’t allow anyone to accompany him inside the house. Even he restricted his disciples to accompany him inside except for Peter, James and John.
There was so much confusion and commotion as everyone were weeping without a control – Unrestrained weeping. How would be the heart of Jairus after witnessing such a depressing environment? But, Jairus tuned to hear his heart the voice of Jesus. He believed in Jesus.
Jesus raises the daughter from the dead
Jesus spoke on the behalf of Jairus. “Why all this weeping and commotion? The child isn’t dead; She is only asleep. But the people were laughing in bitter mockery. So he sent them out.
He took the dad and mom inside. He took her by hand and he said, “Get up little girl!”. The girl jumped up and walked around. The parents couldn’t get over the joy.
Lessons learnt
Even in our life we may be facing distressing situations. Maybe God had said that he would come and help you with something. You have believed him and chose to go along with him.
Now, many people may discourage you along the way. What true God when the thing is already dead? Why disturb God?
But Jesus says to you today,
“My son, Don’t be afraid! Just believe me”.
“My Daughter, Don’t be afraid! Just believe me”.
The choice is yours. Are you going to tune your heart to listen to God or the other discouraging voices?
