How to respond to great distress in life?

David was one of the greatest men that ever lived. His relationship with God is remarkable. David killed Goliath before becoming king of Israel, and as a result, Saul, the king of Israel at the time, felt envious of David and began to sue him. During this time, David fled from King Saul and sought refuge with King Achish of Gath. He was accompanied by 600 men and their families. David asked King Achish for one of the cities so that he and his family might dwell there. As a result, King Achish granted David’s request and gave him the city of Ziklag.

David had been living with them for quite some time. The Philistines were at war with Israel, and King Achish wanted David to fight beside him. As a result, David led his army into battle. The philistine leaders, on the other hand, were not pleased and demanded that David return to his hometown.

So after three days, David and his troops came home. When they arrived in Ziklag, they discovered that the Amalekites had raided their town and taken their wife and children as slaves. They had also burned down their cities. David and his warriors wept bitterly when they saw this. Even his men considered killing David.

David was in great distress. How do we handle situations like this? He was being chased without a reason. He was in a very perilous state. His own men were planning to stone him. This was a direct attack. Many don’t have courage to face the real difficult situations in life. Our problems in life don’t reduce when we follow Jesus. Instead we will face new challenges and new situations in life. How do we overcome such situations? David moved in the forward direction with faith. Are we like David? He went to the Lord. He encouraged himself in the Lord. God gives us the comforter, the holy spirit. When we don’t grieve the holy spirit he gives us the comfort and you will be an overcomer. The secret to be an overcomer is to be right with the Lord. If you have hidden sins in heart, how can you encourage yourself in the Lord? If you go to God and ask him to show you the secrets of your heart, he is ready to show your sins. Once you confess your sins and reconcile with God, he throws away your sins to the depths of the sea. Jesus’ blood has the power to cover all your sins.

Others should know that you will not be shaken by the difficult situations of life. With Christ in the vessel we can smile at the storm. Even when Jesus is there in the vessel with you, there might be storms. But Jesus calms the storm by rebuking it with his words. “When Jesus says a word, your storms would subside”.
